The Obesity Problem in American Children

Posted on February 27th, 2007 in Allsorts by admin

In the United States it is estimated that over 13% of the children are obese or over weight. In 2005 there were an estimated 60 million children under the age of 14 in the United States, which means almost 8 million of those children were over weight and obese. That’s quite a large number of obese children and definitely a cause for alarm. So who’s and/or what’s to blame? Junk food is prevalent in our society and can easily be isolated as one of the main culprits causing our youth’s weight problem. Convenience has seemed to replace nutrition as many parents main criteria when buying food for their children, however that convenience comes with at a high price. It has become a societal norm to eat unhealthy, fattening food, and it’s up to us as parents to regulate what are children eat.

It seems most kids growing up today in America watch quite a bit of TV. During the shows, advertisers try to take advantage of our children by telling them what toys they need, what they should wear, and the food they should eat. Unfortunately most of the “food” marketed towards children is of poor nutritional value, and is often full of all the wrong types of fat. This media assault makes it difficult for parents to buy their children good food without the child insisting on the junk food that is marketed to them by the media. Of course, this is not really the child’s fault, and the parent still has the final say in what makes it home from the supermarket and what doesn’t. Still, a lot of parents don’t want to deal with a whining kid and will get them junk food to make them happy. It’s a similar story with fast food; another horrible junk food prevalent in American society. Most fast food “restaurants” sell fat filled, highly processed food that is unhealthy for an adult, let alone a developing child.

So what’s the solution to our dilemma? Like any good solution, a compromise is often the best route to satisfy both parties. Your kids are still going to want to have snack food, but instead of buying them total junk food full of MSG, research the alternatives. Another good thing is to supplement their diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, vitamins, and minerals, as well as things like noni juice. While avoiding the junk food altogether is the best route, mitigating the amount of fatty foods you feed your child, while supplementing their diet with healthy foods is a great start.

Herbs, a Gentle Way to Promote Healing

Posted on February 23rd, 2007 in Alternative Health by admin

Pharmaceutical drugs are by their very nature chemical concoctions developed in medical labs using toxic and poisonous chemicals in a combination that produces a beneficial effect. Unfortunately, these toxic chemicals have negative side effects on the body while simultaneously performing their intended purpose. This shouldn’t come as a surprise given these substances origins, however there are alternatives that can heal your ailments in a gentle, natural way, devoid of chemical side effects.

The first step towards a healthy lifestyle is a balanced diet. Eating organic, unprocessed, and uncooked vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, and fish will give you most of the essential vitamins and minerals you need to feel your best. I know what you’re thinking, not another one of these “eat healthy” lectures! The reality is that eating healthy can be fun and invigorating, infusing you with more energy then you may realize you were capable of having.

Even with the best of diets there will still be times that you will get sick. It’s just a part of life that everyone has to deal with. Eating healthy is a good preventative measure, and will definitely help your immune system kick most illnesses before they have a chance to establish themselves. However, when you do get sick, instead of turning to pharmaceutical pills with their unpleasant side effects, I recommend using the gentle healing properties of herbs. Their healing power, combined with their beneficial side effects, can be a much healthier alternative then man made chemical solutions.

Noni juice is one such substance that can be used both as a supplement to a healthy diet to help boost your immune system, but also as a natural remedy to help combat sickness when you do start to feel ill. Echinacea and golden seal have also been very effective at fighting colds, fevers, and sore throats that I’ve had, although I wouldn’t recommend them as a daily supplement. Really, the shear number of herbs that have been documented to work effectively at treating human ailments is astounding.

In short, I definitely recommend researching a natural cure for your specific ailment before choosing a synthetic chemical alternative. There are so many herbs out there that are beneficial to our bodies, many of which have additional beneficial side effects. At least look into all your options before settling on a harsh, negative side effect laden pill to “heal” your ailments. Believe me, your body will thank you.

We Might as Well Call Fruits and Vegetables a Scam Too

Posted on February 21st, 2007 in Alternative Health by admin

It’s basic knowledge that fruits and vegetables contain healing properties with their vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. You would be hard pressed to find a nutritionist, doctor, or biologist that wouldn’t agree with that statement. So why do so many people doubt that other plants, herbs and fruits can have beneficial effects on our health and how did these natural remedies come to be regarded as money making hoaxes in the first place? Common knowledge is inaccurate, as history has shown time and time again.

I find it hard to believe that people can recognize the benefits of common natural foods, and then dismiss lesser known foods and herbs as simple money making scams. This would also seem to negate the actual studies conducted on these herbs, such as St. Johns Wort, which has been proven time and time again to reduce depression in a majority of the patients that take the herb. To accurately judge whether an herbal treatment is effective, it is necessary to read and research the results of unbiased studies (in other words, studies not funded explicitly or covertly by the pharmaceutical industry, which has a vested interest in skewing the studies results to protect their revenue stream.)

One potential reason behind people’s skepticism is that you rarely hear about natural remedies through the media, yet you hear, watch, and read about pharmaceutical drugs on a daily basis. TV, the radio, newspapers, and magazines are bombarded with advertisements for every assortment of pills and synthetic drug. It’s no surprise then, when someone hears about a natural remedy to a common ailment, that they would dismiss it as a scam… after all, they’ve never heard about it before, and if it really worked, wouldn’t the media be covering it. This all comes down to exposure to repetition, one of the foundations of effective advertising. You are familiar with the drugs offered by the pharmaceutical companies, yet you’ve never heard once about noni juice, therefore noni juice must not be relevant.

It’s sad to see the common opinion held by the masses to be based on lack of information and skewed scientific data. When there are actual cures out there that are written off as scams by those trying to make money of their patent portfolios, it seems ironically sad that they have swayed the public’s opinion to despise those who are telling the truth about alternative medicines. I encourage everyone to research the information for themselves and to not buy into the herd mentality. After all, fruits and vegetables are good for you, and so are other herbs. It just makes sense.

The Booming Chinese Economy and Natural Remedies

Posted on February 20th, 2007 in Noni Juice by admin

The Chinese economy is a multifaceted system which has been steadily increasing throughout the last several decades. Technology, production, and cheap labor all come to mind when thinking about the strength of the Chinese economy. However, most people don’t instantly associate the Chinese economy with natural remedies, regardless of the fact they are one of the largest exporters of natural remedies in the world. From the culture that brought us acupuncture and feng shui, it should come as no surprise that they provide so many alternative medicines to the world, providing both a benefit to their economy and greater health through out the globe.

The history of Chinese culture helps to shed light on how they became such a huge producer of natural remedies. From the roots of Taoism came the core fundamental spiritual philosophies that dominated the early Chinese view of herbs and their effects on the body to ward off sickness and disease. Other herbs were seen as preventative substances, and were used to keep the body in maximum health. As the centuries passed, the Chinese developed more knowledge of the healing power of natural remedies, and eventually settled on 50 fundamental Chinese herbs.

Today, there has been a dramatic increase in the amount of people turning away from synthetic medicines produced in corporate laboratories, back towards the root of medical knowledge. Evidence of this abounds daily as alternative medicines and holistic remedies such a noni juice increase in popularity across the globe. China’s role in this emerging trend is quite large, considering many of the natural remedies popular today are indigenous to the region. Also, China’s shear landmass coupled with the country’s great understanding of trade and export has produced a ripe market for the country in the alternative health industry, one that is sure to continue for the foreseeable future.

One things for certain, although China has leaps and bounds to go in terms of improving their human rights, the country’s contribution to the world of holistic remedies is among the best in the world. Next time you buy an herbal tincture or natural remedy, don’t be surprised if the bottle says made in China.

The Sexual Benefits of Natural Remedies

Posted on February 19th, 2007 in Allsorts by admin

In the world of medicine, there’s always been a keen interest in effecting our sexuality, either by enhancing the experience, attracting a mate, or through cures for impotence and sexual disorders. Modern drug companies have produced pills such as Viagra (which enjoyed the most successful launch of any drug in history, making almost a billion dollars the first year of its release) which unfortunately has had a rare but persistent side effect of death to a relatively small minority of people who ingest the drug. While most pharmaceutical drugs targeted towards enhancing or correcting human sexuality do not have such drastic (albeit rare) side effects, most of them do carry along some sort of unwanted side effect, which begs the question: what is the healthiest way to enhance our sexuality? From my research, I would conclude that using natural remedies and herbal treatments is not only the most effective method, but also the least dangerous.

Aside from being healthy, which is one of the best sexual stimulators and methods of fighting sexual dysfunctions, there are hundreds of natural remedies that have effects on our sexuality. Some of these natural remedies are healthier then others. For example noni juice, which is extremely good for almost every aspect of your health, has been purported to help low sex drives in both men and women. In fact, some specifically take noni juice, not for it’s immense health benefits, but for it’s enhancement of the sex drive. Other natural remedies such as Ferula hermonis are much more targeted at the sex drive, while yielding less of a health benefit otherwise. Ferula hermonis is said to be almost or as effective as Viagra at fighting impotence in men. Black cohosh is another natural sexual remedy, reputed to help increase a woman’s sex drive, which also has many other health benefits as well.

As you can see, there are definitely many choices when it comes to herbal and natural remedies that specifically effect or enhance human sexuality. Unlike the pharmaceutical solutions, that often leave you with a bunch of undesirable side effects, most natural remedies actually have beneficial “side effects” which make them worth taking regardless of their sexual properties. In fact, I’m sure a lot of people taking natural remedies for other reasons are surprised that their love life has taken such a good turn. It sounds like a win/win situation to me.
