The Obesity Problem in American Children
In the United States it is estimated that over 13% of the children are obese or over weight. In 2005 there were an estimated 60 million children under the age of 14 in the United States, which means almost 8 million of those children were over weight and obese. That’s quite a large number of obese children and definitely a cause for alarm. So who’s and/or what’s to blame? Junk food is prevalent in our society and can easily be isolated as one of the main culprits causing our youth’s weight problem. Convenience has seemed to replace nutrition as many parents main criteria when buying food for their children, however that convenience comes with at a high price. It has become a societal norm to eat unhealthy, fattening food, and it’s up to us as parents to regulate what are children eat.
It seems most kids growing up today in America watch quite a bit of TV. During the shows, advertisers try to take advantage of our children by telling them what toys they need, what they should wear, and the food they should eat. Unfortunately most of the “food” marketed towards children is of poor nutritional value, and is often full of all the wrong types of fat. This media assault makes it difficult for parents to buy their children good food without the child insisting on the junk food that is marketed to them by the media. Of course, this is not really the child’s fault, and the parent still has the final say in what makes it home from the supermarket and what doesn’t. Still, a lot of parents don’t want to deal with a whining kid and will get them junk food to make them happy. It’s a similar story with fast food; another horrible junk food prevalent in American society. Most fast food “restaurants” sell fat filled, highly processed food that is unhealthy for an adult, let alone a developing child.
So what’s the solution to our dilemma? Like any good solution, a compromise is often the best route to satisfy both parties. Your kids are still going to want to have snack food, but instead of buying them total junk food full of MSG, research the alternatives. Another good thing is to supplement their diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, vitamins, and minerals, as well as things like noni juice. While avoiding the junk food altogether is the best route, mitigating the amount of fatty foods you feed your child, while supplementing their diet with healthy foods is a great start.
