Home Remedies –Do They Really Work?

Posted on March 10th, 2007 in Alternative Health by admin

There’s a huge debate that has been going on for the last 150 years or so that has increased with the advent of modern science and its contributions to the medical field. The debate is whether or not home and natural remedies work. On one side, many pharmaceutical companies and their supporters claim that home remedies are simply scams, while on the other side, people who have actually used the remedies claim that they work and that it’s the pharmaceutical companies themselves who are scamming the public. However, these lines are not as clear cut as it may seem at first. In fact, there are numerous scientists and independent and objective lab research that has shown that certain home remedies work. Of course not all home remedies work, but that doesn’t mean that all of them are bogus either.

One of the most widely verified home remedies is noni juice. In one study, conducted by the American Heart Association (AHA), noni juice significantly lowered cholesterol and triglycerides. The University of Hawaii conducted their own noni juice study on mice with cancer. The overwhelming result was that the mice treated with noni lived almost 5 times longer than those who didn’t have the noni treatment. In fact, clinical studies have shown that noni juice acts as an immune boosting agent, a tumor reducer, has strong anti-inflammatory properties, and acts as a powerful antioxidant.

Another well researched home remedy is St John’s Wort, which in clinical study after clinical study has been found to reduce depression in as much as 90% of the patients that take it. St John’s Wort is probably the exception to the norm in terms of the public perception, since virtually every independent study on the herb has found it quite effective at treating depression. Now the question arises in my mind, how can people dismiss all home remedies with such shining examples? Doesn’t each remedy deserve to be tested on its own accord by independent researchers?

So we’ve seen two examples of home remedies that have been scientifically proven time and time again to work effectively, and honestly there are many more. The problem is that these remedies and the people that promote them are not rich, and don’t have the finances to spread the word about these amazing cures. The pharmaceutical companies on the other hand have billions of dollars and a vested interest in you continuing to use their proprietary pills with their nasty side effects. Just remember, there are home remedies out there that science has proven works, so don’t discount them next time you get ill. They may save your life.

Herbs, a Gentle Way to Promote Healing

Posted on February 23rd, 2007 in Alternative Health by admin

Pharmaceutical drugs are by their very nature chemical concoctions developed in medical labs using toxic and poisonous chemicals in a combination that produces a beneficial effect. Unfortunately, these toxic chemicals have negative side effects on the body while simultaneously performing their intended purpose. This shouldn’t come as a surprise given these substances origins, however there are alternatives that can heal your ailments in a gentle, natural way, devoid of chemical side effects.

The first step towards a healthy lifestyle is a balanced diet. Eating organic, unprocessed, and uncooked vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, and fish will give you most of the essential vitamins and minerals you need to feel your best. I know what you’re thinking, not another one of these “eat healthy” lectures! The reality is that eating healthy can be fun and invigorating, infusing you with more energy then you may realize you were capable of having.

Even with the best of diets there will still be times that you will get sick. It’s just a part of life that everyone has to deal with. Eating healthy is a good preventative measure, and will definitely help your immune system kick most illnesses before they have a chance to establish themselves. However, when you do get sick, instead of turning to pharmaceutical pills with their unpleasant side effects, I recommend using the gentle healing properties of herbs. Their healing power, combined with their beneficial side effects, can be a much healthier alternative then man made chemical solutions.

Noni juice is one such substance that can be used both as a supplement to a healthy diet to help boost your immune system, but also as a natural remedy to help combat sickness when you do start to feel ill. Echinacea and golden seal have also been very effective at fighting colds, fevers, and sore throats that I’ve had, although I wouldn’t recommend them as a daily supplement. Really, the shear number of herbs that have been documented to work effectively at treating human ailments is astounding.

In short, I definitely recommend researching a natural cure for your specific ailment before choosing a synthetic chemical alternative. There are so many herbs out there that are beneficial to our bodies, many of which have additional beneficial side effects. At least look into all your options before settling on a harsh, negative side effect laden pill to “heal” your ailments. Believe me, your body will thank you.

We Might as Well Call Fruits and Vegetables a Scam Too

Posted on February 21st, 2007 in Alternative Health by admin

It’s basic knowledge that fruits and vegetables contain healing properties with their vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. You would be hard pressed to find a nutritionist, doctor, or biologist that wouldn’t agree with that statement. So why do so many people doubt that other plants, herbs and fruits can have beneficial effects on our health and how did these natural remedies come to be regarded as money making hoaxes in the first place? Common knowledge is inaccurate, as history has shown time and time again.

I find it hard to believe that people can recognize the benefits of common natural foods, and then dismiss lesser known foods and herbs as simple money making scams. This would also seem to negate the actual studies conducted on these herbs, such as St. Johns Wort, which has been proven time and time again to reduce depression in a majority of the patients that take the herb. To accurately judge whether an herbal treatment is effective, it is necessary to read and research the results of unbiased studies (in other words, studies not funded explicitly or covertly by the pharmaceutical industry, which has a vested interest in skewing the studies results to protect their revenue stream.)

One potential reason behind people’s skepticism is that you rarely hear about natural remedies through the media, yet you hear, watch, and read about pharmaceutical drugs on a daily basis. TV, the radio, newspapers, and magazines are bombarded with advertisements for every assortment of pills and synthetic drug. It’s no surprise then, when someone hears about a natural remedy to a common ailment, that they would dismiss it as a scam… after all, they’ve never heard about it before, and if it really worked, wouldn’t the media be covering it. This all comes down to exposure to repetition, one of the foundations of effective advertising. You are familiar with the drugs offered by the pharmaceutical companies, yet you’ve never heard once about noni juice, therefore noni juice must not be relevant.

It’s sad to see the common opinion held by the masses to be based on lack of information and skewed scientific data. When there are actual cures out there that are written off as scams by those trying to make money of their patent portfolios, it seems ironically sad that they have swayed the public’s opinion to despise those who are telling the truth about alternative medicines. I encourage everyone to research the information for themselves and to not buy into the herd mentality. After all, fruits and vegetables are good for you, and so are other herbs. It just makes sense.

Illicit Medicinal Drugs: Banned to Protect, or for Corporate Profit?

Posted on February 17th, 2007 in Alternative Health by admin

Some of today’s illicit drugs were not so illicit in the recent past, and in fact played large roles in both medical and spiritual practices through out mankind’s history. So why have plants such as cannabis, peyote, and other natural “drugs” been deemed illegal, and just who stood to profit from their black listing? Of course that question can be answered in several different ways, but the most apparent answer is that politicians perceived that they (or society) would somehow benefit from banning these substances.
One of the more obvious beneficiaries was the big pharmaceutical companies. Since many illicit drugs were previously used to treat illnesses ranging from nausea to depression, and even cancer, eliminating these easy to acquire remedies meant that proprietary and patented drugs could be used in their place. Of course this was all done on the pretext that they were banning these substances to protect us, but the only thing they’ve protected us from are freedom of choice and potential natural remedies.
Something I find interesting is that in the United States, a cure to any ailment needs to be approved by the FDA (EMEA in the European Union) or else you cannot say that it diagnoses, treats, or prevents any type of illness or disease. Even in cases such as noni juice, which has been shown to have great benefits to health, and has had evidence presented that it is far greater then a simple supplement, cannot have its healing properties accurately described due to legal bureaucracy. The reason for this is clear, noni juice, like cannabis, cannot be patented and is therefore not valuable to the pharmaceutical industry. The reality of the situation is that if these natural remedies could be patented, the pharmaceutical companies would invest millions of dollars to make sure organizations like the FDA and EMEA approved their proprietary cures. Sadly it seems that cold hard money means more to them then effectively curing sick human beings.
Will we ever know if the pharmaceutical companies had a hand in making cannabis, peyote, and other potential medicinal drugs illegal? The answer is probably not. What we can surmise is that if they weren’t directly involved then, they definitely are now. Who knows what they’ll try and ban next.

The Healing Power of Our Bodies and How We Can Naturally Increase It.

Posted on February 16th, 2007 in Alternative Health by admin

Our bodies heal us on many levels through out our life. From cuts and scratches, to colds and illnesses, our bodies demonstrate that they have certain innate healing abilities within us. To add to that, it’s been demonstrated time and time again that the mind itself, through the power of belief and suggestion, is able to bring about dramatic healing. In addition to that, there are many natural remedies and holistic techniques that have been proven to have dramatic and positive effects on our health and healing process, with little or no side effects. This is in sharp contrast to synthetic pharmaceutical drugs, which often not only fail to heal us, but also introduce side effects that are often worse then the ailments we are trying to heal. Many of these pills and treatments are designed simply to relieve the symptoms of our illness, while ignoring the root cause itself.

Since our bodies are capable of such amazing healing powers, I find that helping the body heal itself is often much more effective then relying on a synthetic chemical to try and do the healing for me. It is alarming that the medical community will acknowledge that an herb such as St. John’s Wart can serve as an effective antidepressant, and yet almost blindly dismiss any other herbal treatment as superstition. The reality of the situation is that these herbal treatments consist of chemicals, just as their pharmaceutical counterparts do. The difference is that while one has evolved through natural means, the other is produced through chemistry. Some of the drugs produced in the lab often start off as chemicals that are poisonous and lethal to humans, while natural herbs and remedies begin as seeds and grow through the power of water and the sun. Just from those basic principles, I’d say that the natural remedies sound quite a bit healthier for the body then pills that start out as toxic chemicals.
So how can we help our bodies along when we’re feeling sick? There are several well known methods to help against common illness. For example, when I feel a cold coming, I eat raw garlic cloves, cayenne red pepper, and echinacea. These not only help my body and immune system fight the cold, but they are also things that are intrinsically healthy for me anyway. They also are fighting the cause of the problem, instead of trying to repress the symptoms of the cold, which does nothing in helping the body heal quicker. In short, since there are so many natural remedies that are healthy for us, there’s no reason not to help our bodies’ already powerful healing abilities along through their use.

Fruit Juice as an Alternative Medicine

Posted on January 31st, 2007 in Alternative Health by admin

As we continue to age, we are dealing with a great deal more disease and illness than we have in the past. Cancer has seemingly taken over society, while other ailments, such as arthritis, [tag]chronic fatigue[/tag[ and high blood pressure affect us on a daily basis. There’s a long list of medication to help alleviate the symptoms of these illnesses, or even to eliminate them altogether. From pain killers to anti histamines to anti inflammatory medicines, there’s something at the pharmacy for everyone and their specific needs. Whether it be over the counter or a prescription, there are pills and potions that claim to help everyone and their specific ailments. However, with side effects present with each drug, many people are turning to more natural substances.

Alternative medicine is a growing concept in the United States and around the world today. Many seek these remedies for their specific health needs. Pills and drinks are the most widely used, fruit juices being among the most popular. Fruit juices can be used as supplements to the diet to help increase nutritional intake. In getting the proper amount of vitamins, minerals, proteins and more that the body needs on a daily basis, an increase in overall health is achieved. Fruit juice is becoming more commonly used in place of traditional medicinal methods, for they are natural and provide benefits that other medicines may not.

In drinking a fruit juice, such as the Noni juice, a person is almost guaranteed the required daily values of certain vitamins, minerals and proteins without having to eat as many solid foods during mealtime. While it is still important to have a well-rounded meal, the Noni juice, as well as other fruit juices, provides an easy, great tasting way to ingest many types of fruits. Another appeal of fruit juices, like the Noni juice is that it is often completely natural. Noni is one hundred percent pure juice and does not contain any preservatives.

Noni is a small tropical fruit found in the Pacific Islands. Nicknamed the “Aspirin of the Ancient,” the Noni fruit has been used as a medicinal remedy for over six hundred years in the Cook Islands and for over 2,000 years in China, India, Polynesia and many other places. Many people use the Noni fruit juice as an alternative to traditional medicine because it is completely natural and has positive rather than negative side effects. Still others use this fruit juice when the current medicine or treatment they are undergoing for a certain ailment or illness is simply not working. Many people have used Noni over traditional medicine to help alleviate arthritis pain, lower their blood pressure, increase their body energy and much more. Some even use Noni fruit juice as an alternative cancer treatment.

Fruit juices, such as the Noni juice, are becoming more popular as people are seeking alternative treatments for their medical problems. Many users of the Noni product report significant, positive results. These results were obtained without putting chemicals into their bodies, but rather something that the body naturally craves and needs on a daily basis. These reasons alone make fruit juices, such as the Noni juice a great medicinal alternative.
