Adult Obesity in the US

Posted on March 9th, 2007 in Conditions and Diseases by admin

The US is the fast food nation, spawning such classics as McDonald’s and Burger King. Unfortunately this love for the unhealthy has left the nation one of the most overweight on earth, with nearly 75% of the population considered overweight! So what exactly has gone wrong with the American lifestyle where 3 out of every 4 people in the country are obese (especially considering America’s obsession with skinny models and celebrities?) Well, obviously diets consisting of fast food are a big factor, but it definitely doesn’t stop there.

The perception of America as a fast paced country obsessed with speed and convenience is unfortunately a correct stereotype. This type of mentality permeates every aspect of American culture, including our diet. All too often proper nutrition is sacrificed so that we can focus on more important things then eating. Of course, eating is an extremely important thing, but it’s easy to put that low on your list of priorities when you’ve got a big deadline at work, or your child’s throwing a fit, or you’ve just spent 8 hours on your feet and you have no energy to make a good meal. Too often we Americans settle for fattening food that saps us of our energy, health, and appearance.

So how can America snap out of the craving for junk food and get back into shape? First, we need to understand that proper dieting is important, more important then catching the opening kick off in a game. We also need to learn that eating healthy can be convenient. Substituting your favorite fruit instead of a pie for desert, replacing your steak with a fish, drinking noni juice instead of a soda; all of these things add up, just as all the junk food adds up as well. The question is what do you want it to add up to?

If continuing to be tired, without energy, and being over weight is fine with you, that’s your choice. America is the land of the free, and all Americans have the right to be obese or in shape. The choice is up to you. However, if you’re looking to make a change, to revitalize yourself, and to get the most out of life, the reality is that it’s not that hard to do. All it takes is a bit of thought in order to integrate a healthy diet into the busy American lifestyle.
