1The Lineup
A good everyday smoothie doesn't need twelve ingredients or a shopping list from a specialist grocer. It needs a clear flavour idea, a handful of familiar fruit, and a blender that gets out of bed with you. These five cover the classics — bright berry, golden mango, deep chocolate-banana, leafy green, and tropical — and each one is genuinely delicious rather than just fine.
1. Classic Berry Blend
Makes 1 large / Prep: 3 min / 5 ingredients
Ingredients
- 1 cup frozen mixed berries (strawberry, blueberry, raspberry — whatever you have)
- ½ frozen banana
- ¾ cup milk of your choice
- 3 tbsp plain yogurt
- 1 tsp honey (optional, taste at the end)
Method 1. Add milk and yogurt to the blender first, then the banana, then the berries on top. 2. Blend on high for 45 seconds until smooth and thick. 3. Taste. Add honey only if your berries are on the tart side.
The frozen banana does all the heavy lifting here — creaminess, body and just enough sweetness to keep the whole thing from tasting like jam.
2. Mango Sunshine
Makes 1 large / Prep: 3 min / 4 ingredients
Ingredients
- 1 cup frozen mango chunks
- ½ cup fresh orange juice (from about 1½ oranges)
- ¼ cup plain yogurt
- Small squeeze of fresh lime
Method 1. Pour juice into the blender, then add yogurt and mango. 2. Blend until completely smooth, about 40 seconds. 3. Add lime juice, pulse once, taste, and pour.
Fresh OJ pulls the mango forward and keeps the colour electric. The lime is small but essential — it cuts the sweetness and makes the whole glass feel brighter.
3. Chocolate Banana
Makes 1 large / Prep: 3 min / 5 ingredients
Ingredients
- 2 ripe frozen bananas (spotty-ripe before freezing)
- 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup milk of your choice
- 1 tbsp peanut or almond butter
- Pinch of fine salt
Method 1. Add all ingredients to the blender. 2. Blend on high for 60 seconds — cocoa needs a full blitz to dissolve evenly. 3. Pour immediately; this one thickens fast.
The pinch of salt sounds small but it sharpens the chocolate flavour considerably. Two spotty frozen bananas give you enough natural sweetness that no added sugar is needed.
4. Everyday Green
Makes 1 large / Prep: 4 min / 6 ingredients
Ingredients
- 1 large handful baby spinach (loosely packed)
- 1 frozen banana
- ½ cup frozen pineapple chunks
- ½ cup apple juice
- ½ cup water
- Juice of ½ lemon
Method 1. Add liquids first, then spinach, then frozen fruit on top. 2. Blend on high for 60 seconds — spinach needs extra time to break down fully. 3. Add lemon juice, blend 5 seconds more, taste, and serve.
Pineapple and banana together are loud enough to cover the spinach completely. The lemon at the end keeps it from tasting flat. If you're new to green blends, this is exactly the right place to start.
5. Tropical Storm
Makes 1 large / Prep: 3 min / 5 ingredients
Ingredients
- ½ cup frozen mango
- ½ cup frozen pineapple
- ½ frozen banana
- ¾ cup coconut water
- Small handful of ice
Method 1. Add coconut water, then fruit, then ice. 2. Blend on high for 45 seconds. 3. Serve immediately in a tall glass.
Coconut water carries the flavour through without making it heavy. The ice in this one is deliberate — it gives Tropical Storm a slightly thinner, colder, more refreshing finish than the others, which suits the sunny brief perfectly.
The honest secret to all five: pre-portioned freezer bags mean you can have any of these on the table in under four minutes flat, even on a Tuesday at seven in the morning when absolutely nothing else is going your way.
