Green Smoothies That Actually Taste Good
The trick isn't hiding the spinach — it's knowing what to pair it with.

1Make green work for you

The reason most green smoothies disappoint comes down to proportion. Too much kale, not enough fruit, and you've got a glass of cold lawn. The fix is surprisingly simple: lead with flavour, and let the greens follow.

Spinach is your best starting point. Raw, it tastes of almost nothing — mild, faintly earthy, completely inoffensive — which means a generous handful vanishes the moment you add ripe fruit. Kale has more backbone and a slight bitterness that needs a stronger hand: pineapple and mango are the classic counterweights, their brightness cutting straight through it.

Frozen mango is the single best friend a green smoothie has. It brings sweetness, body, and a tropical note that makes the whole glass feel like a reward rather than a chore. Frozen banana does a similar job — it thickens the blend and softens any rough edges — and bananas freeze beautifully once spotty, which is exactly the moment to use them here.

The liquid matters more than people think. Coconut water keeps things light and adds a subtle sweetness without heaviness. Almond milk gives a creamier result. Straight water works if your fruit is sweet and ripe. What to avoid: orange juice with kale — the combination turns bitter fast.

A small piece of fresh ginger changes everything. It doesn't read as "ginger smoothie," it just makes the whole glass taste more alive. Lime juice does the same — a good squeeze before blending brightens every other flavour in the cup.

Prep: 5 minutes | Servings: 1 | Ingredients: 7

Ingredients

Method 1. Add the coconut water to the blender first, then the spinach. 2. Add the frozen mango, banana, ginger, and lime juice. 3. Blend on high for 45–60 seconds until completely smooth. 4. Taste — if it needs more brightness, add a little extra lime. More body? Add another chunk of frozen banana. 5. Pour and drink straight away.

The colour will be a confident, deep green. Don't let that put you off — the flavour is mango-forward, lightly tropical, and nothing like grass. Make it once and you'll stop measuring.
